My partner and I arrived in Cape Town from a grey and wet London, with nothing but our helmets, riding gear, and eager expectations. Darrell and Michelle, owners of GS Adventures Motorcycle Tours, organised every detail of the trip—meaning all we needed to do was focus on getting to know our BMW's.
Our journey began in Cape Town, where we collected our rental bikes and were led on an afternoon ride around Chapman’s Peak. It was a glorious experience, equal parts thrilling and surreal on two wheels. My partner was paired with a 1200 Adventure, while I rode a 1250. Thanks to Darrell, I was equipped with a super low seat, which gave me confidence on such a large bike.As a 28-year-old woman who usually commutes on a 600cc, the GS felt like a big step up. However, under Darrell’s expert guidance, the bike quickly became the perfect fit for this adventure.
Fast forward to a gorgeous breakfast in Franschhoek, multiple mountain passes, and countless photo opportunities—I was completely in love with the bike! The roads and routes of the Western Cape and Garden Route tour offered an incredible mix of twisty mountain passes, picturesque coastal roads, and fast, wide-open stretches. The size and power of the bike were absolutely necessary to handle the variety of terrain and make the most of the distances we covered.
Michelle did an amazing job selecting beautiful, unique accommodations—perfect for us as a young couple looking to experience South Africa’s rustic charm while remaining safe and confident.
The Garden Route trip is an ideal option for any eager adventurer seeking unforgettable roads, time to connect with their bike, and a blend of great food, activities, and spectacular weather.
